Volkswagen Opens the Door to Tesla’s Supercharger Network
Volkswagen announced that its ID.4 and ID. Buzz owners will soon gain access to Tesla’s vast Supercharger network across North America. Beginning November 18th, VW drivers can tap into 25,000 NACS-compatible DC fast chargers, dramatically expanding fast-charging options for road trips, daily commuting, and everything in between.
A Major Boost in Charging Convenience
Volkswagen EV owners have long relied on the Electrify America network—which offers more than 5,000 DC fast chargers—but access to Tesla Superchargers represents a huge leap in charging convenience and geographic coverage. With two major networks now available, finding a reliable fast charger becomes far easier, especially in rural areas and along major travel corridors.
“This is great news for our EV owners,” said Petar Danilovic, Senior Vice President of Product Marketing and Strategy at Volkswagen of America. “They will now be able to access the more than 25,000 DC fast chargers on the Tesla Supercharger network across the United States, in addition to the more than 5,000 fast chargers on Electrify America’s grid. This makes life much more convenient, whether you are taking a road trip or you rely on public charging should home charging not be an option.”
How Access Works: The NACS-to-CCS Adapter
Most current Volkswagen EVs use the CCS connector, while Tesla’s Superchargers use the North American Charging System (NACS). To bridge the gap, VW will offer a Volkswagen-approved NACS DC fast-charging adapter.
Here’s what owners need to know:
- Price: $200 MSRP
- Availability: Purchase from VW dealers or online at parts.vw.com
- Rebate: Original owners of MY25 ID.4 and ID. Buzz can claim a $100 rebate within 90 days of purchase (no later than July 15, 2026)
- Standard Equipment: All 2026 model year VW EVs will come with the adapter included
- Important Limitation: The adapter works only with DC fast chargers — not with Level 1 or Level 2 AC chargers, including home chargers or Tesla Destination Chargers
Additionally, owners of some 2024 and 2025 models will receive details about a recommended software update to ensure optimal charging performance on the new network.
Using Tesla Superchargers With Your VW EV
Once owners have the approved adapter, charging is simple:
- Use the Tesla app to locate compatible Superchargers
- Navigate to a NACS-enabled stall
- Plug in using your Volkswagen NACS adapter
- Pay directly through the Tesla app
This streamlined process gives Volkswagen drivers a seamless way to integrate Supercharger use into their regular charging routines.
Why This Matters for the Future of EVs
The industry has been steadily shifting toward broader NACS adoption, and Volkswagen’s move is another clear signal that interoperability is becoming a central priority. More charging choices reduce range anxiety, promote faster EV adoption, and ultimately bring us closer to a highly accessible, standardized public charging ecosystem.
For current and future VW drivers, this change represents both convenience and peace of mind—whether embarking on cross-country adventures or simply navigating daily life without home charging.
