At the 2026 New York International Auto Show, Volkswagen pulled the wraps off something big—literally and figuratively. The all-new 2027 Atlas represents a complete rethinking of the brand’s flagship three-row SUV, building on the success of the original model first introduced in 2017. With a sharper design, more advanced technology, and a renewed focus on premium comfort, this second-generation Atlas aims to push deeper into the competitive midsize SUV segment.

A new Driver Experience Dial adds a tactile element to the tech interface, allowing drivers to control volume, drive modes, and ambient settings with ease. Meanwhile, dual wireless charging pads and up to seven USB-C ports ensure that everyone’s devices stay powered.

One of the more forward-thinking additions is Volkswagen’s AI-enabled voice assistant, which comes with a one-year trial subscription. Volkswagen has clearly listened to customer feedback, packing the new Atlas with more standard features than ever before. Even base models now include a power liftgate, rear sunshades, and parking sensors at both the front and rear.

The standard IQ.DRIVE suite of driver assistance features has been enhanced as well. Despite the boost in power, Volkswagen expects improved fuel efficiency, making the Atlas more economical to run. An eight-speed automatic transmission remains standard, along with front-wheel drive, while the brand’s 4Motion all-wheel-drive system is available across the lineup.

The Atlas continues to offer a towing capacity of up to 5,000 pounds when properly equipped, ensuring it remains a practical choice for families with boats, trailers, or campers.

Space and Practicality Still Lead the Way

Even with all these updates, Volkswagen hasn’t lost sight of what made the Atlas successful: space. Built on the updated MQB Evo platform, the new model retains its roomy third row and generous cargo capacity.
