Here’s What We Know About Toyota’s New Compact Pickup

Toyota trucks are getting smaller—but in the best way possible. Toyota has officially confirmed it’s developing an all-new compact pickup truck that will slot below the Tacoma in its lineup. Targeting competitors like the Ford Maverick and Hyundai Santa Cruz, this upcoming small Toyota truck is shaping up to be a game-changer in the world of urban-friendly utility vehicles.

While it won’t hit dealerships until 2027, anticipation is already building. Here’s everything we know so far about Toyota’s new small truck, from design and powertrains to platform and pricing.

Confirmed: A New Toyota Compact Truck Is in the Works

In a May 2025 interview with MotorTrend, Cooper Ericksen—Toyota North America’s head of planning and strategy—made it official: a new compact pickup is on the way.

“It’s not a matter of ‘if’ at this point,” Ericksen said.

The primary reason for the delay? Toyota’s strategic focus on advancing hybrid and electric vehicle technology. But now that those systems are maturing, the brand is ready to turn its attention to a more compact offering in its Toyota truck lineup.

What Will Toyota Call Its New Small Truck?

Toyota hasn’t officially revealed a name yet, but there are a few strong possibilities:

  • Toyota Stout: A historic nameplate originally launched in 1954. Toyota trademarked the name in Argentina in 2022, fueling speculation of its return.
  • Toyota Hilux: A global favorite, but it’s unlikely for the U.S. market due to its rugged image and overlap with the Tacoma.

Regardless of the name, this new Toyota compact pickup will represent a fresh entry into a fast-growing market segment.

Built on a Solid Foundation

Expect this truck to ride on a unibody chassis using Toyota’s TNGA (Toyota New Global Architecture) platform. While early rumors suggested a Corolla-based TNGA-C layout, a more capable TNGA-K platform—shared with the RAV4, Camry, and Highlander—is more likely.

Why? The TNGA-K offers:

  • Greater towing capacity (up to 3,500 lbs in the RAV4)
  • More interior space
  • Better overall utility for a pickup configuration

For fans of Toyota pickup trucks, this platform hints at a perfect blend of drivability and durability.

Hybrid Powertrains Expected

In true Toyota fashion, the upcoming compact truck will be hybrid-only, offered in both FWD and AWD configurations. Likely engine options include:

  • A 2.5L four-cylinder hybrid (226–236 horsepower)
  • A possible plug-in hybrid variant from the RAV4 Prime with up to 320 horsepower

If Toyota includes the PHEV setup, it could become the most powerful compact pickup in its class—leaving the Ford Maverick Hybrid and Santa Cruz in the dust.

Rugged Yet Refined

Even though it’s a unibody truck, don’t expect this new Toyota to look soft.

Design features may include:

  • Trapezoidal grille
  • Bold, blocky headlights
  • Prominent fender flares and wheel arches

Inside, look for a more car-like interior, possibly inspired by the RAV4 or Corolla Cross, with advanced safety tech and a user-friendly infotainment setup. Unlike the Tacoma or Tundra, this small truck won’t focus on chunky knobs or utilitarian styling—expect a cleaner, more urban-friendly feel.

Expected Price: Starting Around $30K

To compete with rivals, Toyota’s compact pickup will need to hit a sweet price point. Here’s what we’re expecting:

  • Base model: ~$30,000
  • Fully loaded TRD or Limited trim: ~$45,000

It’ll almost certainly undercut the Toyota Tacoma, which starts around $33,000, making it an attractive entry point into the Toyota truck family.

When Will Toyota’s Compact Pickup Arrive?

The wait will be a bit long. Toyota is targeting a 2027 release date, with potential previews or concept versions arriving in 2026. The timing may feel distant, but Toyota is known for refining vehicles to perfection before launch—this one should be worth it.

The Toyota Truck Lineup Is Expanding, And That’s a Good Thing

Between the full-size Tundra, mid-size Tacoma, and now a future compact Toyota truck, the brand is building a comprehensive pickup lineup that covers all needs and price points. Whether you want trail capability, daily drivability, or fuel efficiency, Toyota is getting ready to deliver it all.

Stay tuned for more updates as the 2027 debut approaches. If you’re in the market for a compact, efficient, and capable pickup, Toyota’s new small truck might just be worth the wait.
